Frequently Asked Questions
How does the booking process work?
You search dates and location on the Rodavia website, compare offers from local suppliers, and select the vehicle that fits your needs. After entering driver details and contact information, you pay a booking advance online. Within minutes, you receive a voucher by email with the supplier's name, pick-up instructions, and the terms that apply to your reservation.
What documents do I need at the counter?
The supplier will ask for your voucher (printed or on your phone), a valid driving licence held for the minimum period stated in the terms, passport or national ID, and a credit card in the main driver's name. Some suppliers accept debit cards; check your voucher for the payment methods allowed at collection.
Can I change or cancel my reservation?
Cancellation and amendment rules depend on the rate you selected and are shown before payment. Many suppliers allow free cancellation up to a certain number of hours before pick-up. To modify dates or request cancellation, contact us by email at [email protected] or phone +34 928 731 645 during office hours.
What are the age and experience requirements?
Minimum age is usually 21 years, and you must have held your licence for at least one year. Drivers under 25 or over 70 may face a young-driver or senior-driver supplement; these conditions appear in the rate details and your voucher. Some vehicle groups require the driver to be 25 or older.
How does fuel work?
The standard policy is full-to-full: you collect the vehicle with a full tank and return it full. Fuel in the Canary Islands is subject to IGIC rather than mainland IVA, so pump prices are lower than on the peninsula. If you return the vehicle without refilling, the supplier will charge for the missing litres plus a refuelling fee.
Can I drive between islands?
Vehicles normally stay on the island where you collect them. Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas operate car ferries between Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, but most vouchers explicitly prohibit taking the vehicle on a ferry. If you need to visit another island, check the terms or ask before you book.
What about tolls and parking?
There are no toll roads in the Canary Islands. Street parking in town centres is regulated by blue and green zones; you pay at a meter during the hours posted on the sign. Underground and surface car parks charge by the hour or day. Always lock the vehicle and keep valuables out of sight.
What happens if I have a problem during the rental period?
Your voucher includes the supplier's emergency telephone number, which is staffed whenever a vehicle is out on hire. For breakdowns, accidents, or questions about the contract, call that number first. Rodavia can help with booking questions and relay messages, but the rental agreement is between you and the local supplier named in your voucher.
Where do I collect the vehicle at the airport?
Gran Canaria LPA and both Tenerife airports have desks inside the terminal and vehicle parks within walking distance. Your voucher will state whether the supplier has a desk in arrivals or a meet-and-greet service. At Tenerife TFS Reina Sofia most suppliers are in the rental village next to the terminal; at TFN Los Rodeos counters are inside the arrivals hall.
